What Is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown is essentially a tooth-like cover or a “cap” placed on top of a tooth to cover the cracks, crevices or irregularities in the tooth. The purpose of dental crowns is to restore the shape, size and strength of the tooth. Dental crowns also help in improving the overall appearance of your teeth. Once cemented into place, the crowns completely cover the visible portion of the tooth that lies above the gum line.

A crown is also known as “dental restoration.” Dental crowns can help restore the natural state of your teeth if they have been cracked or chipped. There are several other alternative treatments as well that can be used to fix damaged teeth. You may also go for veneers, bridges or implants depending upon your specific concern and the advice of your dentist. However, a crown is a more enduring solution than most other options as it completely encircles a tooth, covering all weaknesses. Dental crowns can be made of different types of materials.

Do You Need a Dental Crown?

Here are the situations in which dental crowns may be required:

  • Dental crowns are needed to protect and secure a weak tooth. They safeguard and preserve a tooth from decay and breakage. Crowns can also help in holding together parts of a cracked tooth. This helps in enhancing the overall stability of the tooth.
  • With dental crowns, you can restore an already broken tooth or one that has been damaged severely beyond the scope of repair.
  • Dental crowns can completely encase the tooth and lend support to the tooth that has a large filling.
  • Crowns are also used to hold the dental bridge in place.
  • A dental crown is a great way to cover misshapen or discoloured teeth.
  • Many dentists also use dental crowns to cover dental implants.
  • A range of cosmetic modifications is conducted using dental crowns.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain crowns/caps are used to protect and restore teeth. They prevent further tooth damage and maintain a healthy and beautiful smile.

We recommend a tooth crown for the following:

  • For the protection of a weak, damaged tooth

  • To provide support for a fractured tooth

  • To help restore a tooth after a root canal

  • To replace a missing tooth

  • To provide support to a replacement tooth in a dental bridge

  • To improve your smile

  • For fractured fillings

  • For large fillings

At Harborn Dental, we offer you high-quality porcelain crowns to restore your damaged tooth to its original shape and size. A crown is placed over a damaged tooth to protect and strengthen the tooth structure. Porcelain crowns are used for teeth that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.

We offer several types of crowns:

  • Gold alloy crowns

  • Porcelain with gold alloy crowns

  • Porcelain (tooth coloured) crowns

Porcelain crowns are highly durable and last many years. But they need to be replaced eventually, after a few years, just like most dental restorations. Our porcelain dental crowns are specially designed to match the shape, size, and colour of your teeth and give you a long-lasting, beautiful smile.

The Process of Getting a Crown

The procedure of getting a crown usually requires two sittings. In your first sitting, your dentist will take several accurate impressions of your tooth. These moulds will be used to create your custom crown that perfectly matches your tooth shape, size and colour. The dentist will fit a temporary crown on your tooth till the time your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory. The tooth is made numb by administering local anesthesia. During this time, the dentist will remove any decay from the tooth and will shape the surface of your tooth to properly fit the crown. After this, your dentist will place the temporary crown on your tooth and will fix it with temporary cement. You will then have to check your bite to ensure a proper bite.

Once your permanent crown is ready, your second appointment will be scheduled when it will be removed. Your dentist will remove the temporary crown, clean the surface and place the custom crown carefully to ensure accurate spacing and bite.

Talk to your dentist about the care instructions after the procedure. We encourage regular dental visits to keep a check on your new crown.
