Does your missing or broken tooth stop you from smiling? Accidents, poor oral health, or diseases can leave you with just a few healthy teeth. At Harborn Dental in Mississauga, we provide crowns, bridges, and dentures to replace your damaged teeth.
Porcelain Crowns (Caps)
A crown (or cap) is a covering that encases the entire tooth surface, restoring it to its original shape and size. A crown protects and strengthens tooth structure that cannot be restored with fillings or other types of restorations.
There are several types of crowns: gold alloy crowns, porcelain with gold alloy crown, and porcelain (tooth coloured) crowns. They are highly durable and will last many years, but like most dental restorations, they may eventually need to be replaced. Crowns are made to match the shape, size, and colour of your teeth, giving you a long-lasting, beautiful smile.
What Does Getting a Crown Involve?
A crown procedure usually requires two appointments. Your first appointment will include taking several highly accurate molds (or impressions) that will be used to create your custom crown. A mold will also be used to create a temporary crown which will stay on your tooth for approximately two weeks until your new crown is fabricated by a dental laboratory. While the tooth is numb, the dentist will prepare the tooth by removing any decay and shaping the surface to properly fit the crown. Once these details are accomplished, your temporary crown will be placed with temporary cement and your bite will be checked to ensure you are biting properly.
At your second appointment your temporary crown will be removed, the tooth will be cleaned, and your new crown will be carefully placed to ensure the spacing and bite is accurate.
You will be given care instructions and encouraged to have regular dental visits to check your new crown.
Crowns Are Required for the Following Reasons:
Broken or fractured teeth
Tooth has a root canal
If a tooth is lost, it is important to replace it with a false (or artificial) tooth as soon as possible. This procedure will prevent your remaining teeth from drifting out of line and causing other problems. A dental bridge can replace one or more missing teeth and is held firmly in place by healthy teeth on each side of the missing one(s). You cannot remove a bridge. It is permanent.
A tooth on either side of the space is needed to support the bridge. These teeth are referred to as the abutment teeth. The abutment teeth are prepared by reducing the tooth structure around and on top of the tooth. This creates space for the bridge to fit over the abutment teeth.
An impression is then taken of the teeth and sent to a lab. The lab then uses the impression to create a bridge that is customized for your teeth. This process takes about one week. You will leave the office with a temporary bridge made by the dentist at chair side. This temporary bridge will protect the teeth from sensitivity and shifting while your permanent bridge is being made.
A bridge should last for about 10 years, if you take good care of it. Our dentist will show you how to use a floss threader to floss under and around the false tooth (or teeth) in the middle of the bridge.
One can lose their teeth due to accidents, diseases, or ageing. This may interfere with everyday activities like chewing, talking or laughing, which may lead to psychological and physical problems. Don’t let missing teeth affect your self-esteem. At Harborn Dental, we provide custom full and partial dentures to restore your smile.
Full and Partial Dentures
If all your natural teeth need to be replaced, a set of customized, removable teeth will be provided to you. Full dentures are provided to you only when your gum has healed completely after the tooth extraction. This may take a few months. However, a temporary set of teeth can be provided until you receive your permanent ones.
If you wish to replace only a few of your teeth or have gaps that you would like to fill in, partial dentures are one of the best options. These are similar to bridges but are removable.
